ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Engineering Meets Craft In Northwest Chicago

Crystal Rain Distillery opened in 2019 in Wheeling, Illinois, founded by husband-and-wife team Mike and Lisa Kapusta. Mike brings a background in engineering while Lisa handled the business side, and they transformed a former industrial space into their 3,000-square-foot distillery operation. They focus on small-batch vodka production using a custom-built 500-gallon copper still, with plans that originally included whiskey but have concentrated on perfecting their vodka craft. The name “Crystal Rain” reflects their commitment to creating clean, pure spirits through meticulous distillation processes. What started as a retirement project for the Kapustas has evolved into a legitimate craft distillery serving the northwest Chicago suburbs. The facility combines production space with a tasting room where visitors can sample their handcrafted spirits and learn about the distillation process from the founders themselves.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Vodka Perfectionists Not Spirit Collectors

Crystal Rain stands out as one of the few craft distilleries in the northwest Chicago suburbs, filling a gap in an area better known for breweries than spirits production. The Kapustas’ engineering background shows in their methodical approach to distillation, using precise temperature controls and multiple distillation runs to achieve consistency. They’ve focused intensively on perfecting vodka production rather than rushing into multiple spirit categories, spending considerable time refining their mash bill and distillation techniques. The intimate scale means you’re likely to meet the actual founders during your visit, and they’re genuinely enthusiastic about explaining their processes and the challenges of starting a distillery in Illinois.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Founders In Their Workshop

Visits to Crystal Rain feel more like stopping by a friend’s workshop than touring a large commercial operation. The tasting room occupies part of the production floor, so you can see the copper still and fermentation tanks while sampling their vodka. Mike or Lisa typically handle tastings personally, walking you through their distillation philosophy and answering questions about everything from grain sourcing to the regulatory hurdles of opening in Illinois. The space has an industrial-meets-homey vibe with concrete floors but comfortable seating areas. Tastings focus on their vodka expressions, and they’ll often explain the technical aspects of what you’re tasting if you’re interested.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

For Spirits Geeks Absolutely Worth It

Crystal Rain works best for people genuinely curious about craft distilling, especially if you appreciate vodka or want to understand the technical side of spirits production. This isn’t a polished tourist experience with elaborate tours or fancy gift shops—it’s a working distillery where passionate founders share their craft. If you’re looking for a big bourbon experience or expect multiple spirit options, you’ll be disappointed. But if you want to support local craft spirits, meet the actual distillers, and taste vodka made with serious attention to detail, it’s worth the trip. The intimate setting means you’ll get more personal attention than at larger operations.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead before visiting since hours can vary with production schedules and the Kapustas sometimes handle tastings themselves. The distillery is in an industrial area that GPS might find tricky, so look for the address on Foster Avenue and expect a more utilitarian building exterior. Weekends typically offer the best chance to meet Mike and Lisa personally. Come with questions about the distillation process if you’re technically minded—they love talking shop. Don’t expect a full bar experience; this is primarily about tasting their vodka and learning about their craft. Parking is available on-site.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Crystal Rain Distillery, Inc — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to call ahead before visiting?
Yes, definitely call before coming out. Since Mike and Lisa often handle tastings personally and production schedules can affect availability, calling ahead ensures they’ll be ready for visitors and can give you their full attention.
Do you make bourbon or whiskey?
Currently they focus exclusively on vodka production. While they’ve discussed whiskey in the past, they’ve concentrated on perfecting their vodka craft rather than expanding into aged spirits.
Can I buy bottles to take home?
Yes, they sell bottles of their Crystal Rain Vodka on-site. This is often the only place to find their spirits since distribution is limited to local accounts.
