ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Copper Still Distillery sits in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, founded by Mike Holloway, a former aircraft mechanic who traded fixing planes for crafting spirits. The distillery opened in 2018 after Holloway spent years perfecting his recipes and navigating Arizona’s complex distilling regulations. Located in a 3,000-square-foot facility on Acoma Boulevard, they produce small-batch bourbon, whiskey, and vodka using a 500-gallon copper still that gives the operation its name. Holloway’s journey into distilling started as a hobby that grew into an obsession. After retiring from aviation, he dove deep into the science of fermentation and distillation, spending three years developing his flagship bourbon recipe. The transition from hobby to commercial operation required convincing Lake Havasu City officials that a distillery would be a good fit for the tourist-heavy community. Master distiller duties remain with Holloway himself, who oversees every batch personally and takes pride in explaining his process to visitors. The tasting room has a desert-industrial vibe with copper accents throughout, reflecting both the still and the Arizona setting. Visitors can sample spirits while learning about the distillation process from Holloway or his small team. The operation remains deliberately small-scale, producing around 1,000 bottles monthly. What makes this place worth visiting isn’t massive production or elaborate tours—it’s the chance to meet a passionate craftsman who genuinely loves talking about his work and will probably remember you if you come back.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Copper Still stands out as Lake Havasu City’s first and only distillery, bringing craft spirits to a town better known for its party boats and London Bridge replica. Holloway’s background as an aircraft mechanic shows up in his meticulous attention to detail and systematic approach to distilling—he treats each batch like a precision operation. The desert location also creates unique aging conditions, with extreme temperature swings that accelerate the interaction between spirits and oak. Unlike many craft distilleries that source neutral grain spirits, Copper Still does everything in-house from mashing to bottling, and Holloway isn’t shy about explaining exactly how his process differs from larger operations.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

You’ll walk into a working distillery where the copper still dominates the space and the smell of fermenting grains hits you immediately. Holloway or one of his team members will take you through the entire process, from grain to bottle, and they actually know what they’re talking about—no scripted tours here. The tasting happens right at the bar in the production space, so you’re sampling spirits while watching the actual work happen. Holloway loves answering technical questions and will gladly geek out about mash bills, cut points, and aging if you’re interested. The whole experience feels like visiting a friend’s workshop rather than a polished tourist attraction.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you’re in Lake Havasu City and want something different from the usual waterfront bars, absolutely. This isn’t a destination distillery that’ll draw bourbon hunters from across the state, but it’s a solid stop for anyone curious about craft spirits or small-batch production. You’ll learn more about actual distilling in 30 minutes here than on most big-name distillery tours. The spirits are good, not great, but Holloway’s passion is infectious and the intimate setting makes for a memorable experience. Skip it if you’re looking for elaborate facilities or rare bottles, but don’t miss it if you want to support local craft spirits and meet someone who genuinely loves what he does.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their Facebook page before visiting—hours can be irregular, especially during slower tourist seasons. The distillery is in a business complex that’s easy to miss, so look for the copper still sign rather than relying on GPS alone. Parking is usually easy to find right out front. Ask Holloway about his aviation background and how it influenced his distilling approach—he loves connecting those dots. If you’re interested in the technical side, visit during production hours when you can see the process in action. Don’t expect a gift shop full of branded merchandise, but you can definitely buy bottles to take home.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Copper Still Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do you need to make reservations to visit?
No reservations needed, but it’s smart to call ahead or check their Facebook page since hours can vary seasonally. During busy Lake Havasu tourist periods, they’re more likely to be open regular hours.
How long does a typical visit take?
Plan on 30-45 minutes for the full experience including tasting and learning about the production process. If you’re really interested in the technical details, Mike Holloway will happily talk longer about distilling methods and his aviation background.
Can you buy bottles to take home?
Yes, they sell their bourbon and vodka on-site for take-home. Selection depends on what they have in stock from recent batches. Prices are reasonable for craft spirits, and you’re supporting the only distillery in Lake Havasu City.
