ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Working Production Facility Not a Show Distillery

Claremont Distillery sits on Route 94 in Hardyston, New Jersey, where founder Kevin Norder turned his passion for craft spirits into reality in 2014. After years in corporate America, Norder decided to follow his dream of creating premium small-batch spirits, converting a former industrial building into a working distillery that produces bourbon, rye whiskey, and vodka. The facility combines modern distillation equipment with traditional aging methods, creating a space where visitors can watch the entire production process from grain to glass. The journey wasn’t easy – Norder spent years navigating New Jersey’s complex distillery licensing requirements and building out the production facility from scratch. He installed a custom-built copper still system and dedicated significant space to barrel aging, understanding that quality whiskey requires patience. The distillery focuses on using locally sourced grains when possible and follows traditional mash bill recipes that emphasize flavor over volume. Today, Claremont operates as both a production facility and tasting room, offering visitors the chance to sample spirits directly from the source. The atmosphere is industrial yet welcoming, with exposed beams and concrete floors that showcase the working nature of the operation. You’ll find Norder or his team often on-site, eager to discuss their distillation process and the challenges of building a craft distillery in New Jersey’s competitive spirits landscape.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Grain to Glass In Northwest Jersey

Claremont stands out as one of the few grain-to-glass distilleries operating in northwestern New Jersey, filling a gap in the region’s craft spirits scene. The distillery’s approach emphasizes traditional bourbon and rye production methods adapted to New Jersey’s climate and regulations. Norder’s background in business brings a methodical approach to production that balances innovation with respect for whiskey-making traditions, while the facility’s setup allows visitors to see every step of the process in one location.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Industrial Setting Real Deal Operations

When you visit Claremont, you’re stepping into an active production facility where the smell of fermenting grain and aging whiskey fills the air. Tours typically include a walkthrough of the mash room, fermentation tanks, and distillation area, where you can see the copper stills in action during production days. The tasting room features samples of their current offerings, with staff explaining the differences between their bourbon and rye expressions. The industrial setting gives you an authentic behind-the-scenes look at small-batch distilling without the polish of larger operations.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Perfect for Spirits Nerds Skip the Tourist Polish

Claremont appeals to whiskey enthusiasts who appreciate seeing the nuts and bolts of distillation rather than a highly polished tourist experience. If you’re interested in learning about the technical aspects of making bourbon and rye whiskey, and you don’t mind an industrial setting, you’ll find the visit educational and authentic. However, if you’re looking for elaborate tours, food pairings, or fancy cocktails, this might not match your expectations. It’s better suited for spirits nerds and locals curious about New Jersey’s growing craft distillery scene than casual tourists seeking entertainment.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead before visiting since Claremont operates primarily as a production facility and may not always be open for tastings. Weekend visits often offer the best chance to catch someone available for tours and tastings, but production schedules can vary. The location on Route 94 is straightforward to find, with adequate parking available on-site. Ask about their aging process and how New Jersey’s climate affects whiskey maturation compared to traditional bourbon regions – it’s something they’re genuinely passionate about discussing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Claremont Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to schedule a visit in advance?
Yes, definitely call ahead since this is primarily a working distillery. They don’t maintain regular tasting room hours like some larger operations, so scheduling ensures someone will be available to show you around and provide tastings.
What’s the difference between their bourbon and rye whiskey?
Their bourbon follows traditional mash bill requirements with corn as the primary grain, while their rye whiskey features rye as the dominant grain, creating spicier, more complex flavors. During tastings, they’ll walk you through how these different grain bills affect the final product.
How does New Jersey’s climate affect their whiskey aging?
New Jersey’s four-season climate with hot summers and cold winters creates more temperature variation than some traditional whiskey regions. This causes more expansion and contraction in the barrels, potentially accelerating the aging process and flavor extraction compared to more stable climates.
