ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Citrus Distillers operates out of a 5,000-square-foot facility on Harper Street in Jacksonville’s Riverside neighborhood, where founders David and Sarah Mitchell launched their craft spirits operation in 2018. David brings two decades of experience as a chemical engineer to the distilling process, while Sarah’s background in hospitality shapes their visitor experience. They focus on small-batch production using a 500-gallon copper still imported from Germany, creating vodka, gin, and rum that reflect Florida’s citrus heritage. The facility occupies a renovated automotive repair shop that the Mitchells spent nearly two years converting into a working distillery with exposed brick walls, polished concrete floors, and industrial lighting that gives the space a modern industrial feel. Their production philosophy centers on using locally-sourced ingredients whenever possible, including citrus peels from Florida groves and sugarcane from regional suppliers. The couple started this venture after David’s early retirement from the aerospace industry, combining his technical precision with Sarah’s customer service expertise to create something uniquely their own.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

What sets Citrus Distillers apart is their commitment to incorporating authentic Florida citrus into nearly every spirit they produce. They maintain relationships with three local citrus groves, using fresh peels from oranges, grapefruits, and key limes in their distillation process rather than artificial flavoring. Their signature vapor infusion method allows citrus oils to naturally integrate during distillation, creating clean, bright spirits without the artificial taste common in flavored spirits. The facility also features one of the few custom-built continuous distillation systems in Northeast Florida, allowing them to maintain consistent quality while producing multiple spirit types. David’s engineering background shows in their precise temperature control and custom-designed fermentation tanks that maintain optimal conditions for their specific yeast strains.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Tours at Citrus Distillers run about 45 minutes and are led by either David or one of his two trained staff members who walk you through their grain-to-glass process. You’ll start in the milling area where they break down their grains, move through the fermentation room where the sweet smell of working mash fills the air, and end at their gleaming copper still where you can see the distillation process in action if you visit during production hours. The tasting room features a sleek bar made from reclaimed Florida cypress with space for about 20 people, and Sarah often handles tastings personally, explaining how different citrus additions affect each spirit’s profile. The space feels more like a modern craft brewery than a traditional distillery, with garage doors that open to let in natural light and industrial fans that keep air circulating.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Citrus Distillers appeals most to visitors who appreciate innovation in craft spirits and want to understand how local ingredients can transform traditional recipes. You won’t find aged whiskeys or bourbon here, so if that’s your main interest, this might not be your stop. However, if you’re curious about vodka and gin production or want to taste how authentic Florida citrus can elevate spirits, this is genuinely worth your time. The Mitchell’s hands-on approach means you’re likely to meet the actual founders, which adds a personal touch you won’t get at larger operations. The location in Riverside also puts you within walking distance of several excellent restaurants if you want to make it part of a larger outing.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Book your tour online at least a week ahead since they only run tours on Fridays and Saturdays, and groups are limited to 12 people. The address can be tricky to find since it’s tucked between two larger buildings, but look for the small Citrus Distillers sign near the entrance. Parking is available behind the building, but it’s limited to about eight spots, so carpooling helps. If you visit during production days (Wednesday through Friday), you’ll see the still in operation, which makes the tour more engaging. Ask David about their vapor infusion process if you get the chance – he loves explaining the technical details and it’s genuinely fascinating. Don’t expect a full restaurant, but they do offer small plates that pair well with their spirits if you call ahead.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Citrus Distillers — Visitor FAQ

Do you offer tours during the week?
Tours are only available on Fridays and Saturdays at 3PM and 6PM. However, if you’re part of a private group of 8 or more, they can sometimes arrange weekday tours with advance notice.
Where do you source your citrus?
They work with three Florida citrus groves – two in the Orlando area and one near Sebring. All citrus is delivered fresh weekly during peak season, and they use the peels immediately in their vapor infusion process to capture the essential oils at their most potent.
Can I buy bottles to take home?
Yes, all flagship spirits are available for purchase on-site, and they often have limited releases available exclusively at the distillery. Prices range from $35-$45 for 750ml bottles, and they offer a 10% discount if you buy three or more bottles.
