ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Riverfront Craft Spirits In Historic Wisconsin

Chippewa River Distillery sits right on the Chippewa River in downtown Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, in a renovated historic building that used to house various industrial operations. Founded by Dan Kanter and his business partner in 2015, this craft distillery brings small-batch spirits production to a town better known for its brewing heritage. Kanter, who had a background in business and a passion for craft spirits, saw an opportunity to create something unique in western Wisconsin’s growing craft beverage scene. The distillery produces bourbon, rye whiskey, vodka, and gin in their 3,000-square-foot facility, using traditional methods combined with modern equipment. The operation runs on a relatively small scale, which allows them to focus on quality and experimentation with different mash bills and aging techniques. You’ll find them in a brick building with large windows overlooking the river, creating an industrial-meets-rustic atmosphere that fits perfectly with Chippewa Falls’ historic character. The space includes their production area, tasting room, and retail shop, giving visitors a complete picture of how their spirits go from grain to glass. What started as a dream between friends has grown into a legitimate player in Wisconsin’s craft spirits movement, earning recognition for their bourbon and rye expressions.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Traditional Bourbon Methods With Wisconsin Character

The location alone sets Chippewa River Distillery apart—you’re literally tasting spirits while looking out at the Chippewa River that gives the distillery its name. They’re one of the few distilleries in Wisconsin that focuses heavily on aged spirits like bourbon and rye, rather than just clear spirits that don’t require aging time. Their approach to bourbon making incorporates both traditional Kentucky techniques and their own Wisconsin twist, using local grains when possible and aging in full-size barrels rather than the smaller barrels some craft distilleries use to speed up the process. The historic building adds character you won’t find in purpose-built facilities, with original brick walls and industrial features that create an authentic backdrop for their operation.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Working Distillery Views Through Original Windows

You’ll walk into a space that feels like an authentic working distillery rather than a polished tourist destination. The tasting room overlooks their production equipment, so you can see the stills and fermentation tanks while sampling their spirits. Tours take you through their grain-to-glass process, explaining everything from milling to distillation to aging, and you’ll get to see their rickhouse where the magic of aging happens. The staff knows their products inside and out and can talk technical details if you’re interested, or keep things casual if you just want to try some good whiskey. Tastings typically include their core lineup of spirits, and they’ll often have barrel-strength samples or experimental batches available for more adventurous palates. The river views through the windows create a relaxed atmosphere that makes you want to linger over your tasting.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Craft Whiskey Worth the River Drive

If you’re into craft spirits, especially aged ones like bourbon and rye, this place delivers something you can’t get at larger operations—direct access to the people making the spirits and a chance to taste things that might not make it to wide distribution. The setting is genuinely cool, and the river location gives it a character that generic industrial park distilleries lack. It’s not going to blow you away with flashy presentations or massive operations, but that’s actually part of its appeal. You’ll leave with a real understanding of how their spirits are made and probably a bottle or two of something you can’t find elsewhere. For casual visitors, it’s an interesting hour or two, especially if you’re exploring Chippewa Falls anyway. For whiskey enthusiasts, it’s a chance to taste some legitimately good craft bourbon and rye while talking shop with the people who made it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Chippewa River Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make a reservation for tastings or tours?
Reservations aren’t typically required for small groups, but it’s smart to call ahead since they’re a working distillery and sometimes need to close for production. For larger groups or during busy weekends, definitely call first to make sure they can accommodate you.
What spirits should I focus on during my tasting?
Their bourbon and rye whiskey are really where they shine—these aged spirits show off their skills and attention to detail. The vodka and gin are well-made too, but the whiskeys are what put them on the map and what most visitors remember.
Can I buy bottles of their spirits to take home?
Yes, they sell bottles on-site and often have spirits available that you can’t find in stores. Their bourbon and rye make great souvenirs, and the staff can recommend which expressions travel best or make good gifts.
