ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

From Navy Pilot to Virginia Distiller

Chesapeake Bay Distillery sits in the heart of Virginia Beach, founded by Chuck and Catherine Miller in 2012. Chuck, a former Navy pilot, and Catherine, who worked in hospitality, decided to combine their love of craft spirits with Virginia’s agricultural heritage. The distillery operates out of a 6,000-square-foot facility on Virginia Beach Boulevard, where they’ve been crafting small-batch spirits using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. Their copper pot stills produce a range of spirits including bourbon, rye, vodka, and gin, with a focus on traditional methods and Virginia-grown grains. What started as a passion project has grown into one of Virginia’s respected craft distilleries, earning recognition for their commitment to quality and local sourcing. The Millers built their operation from the ground up, learning the craft through trial, error, and mentorship from other distillers. They’ve created a space that feels authentically Virginia, where visitors can taste spirits that reflect the state’s agricultural bounty. The distillery represents that classic American dream story – military service member and spouse turning their retirement passion into a thriving business that serves their community.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Built for Distilling Not Tourism

Chuck Miller’s background as a Navy pilot brings a precision and attention to detail that shows in every aspect of production. The distillery focuses heavily on Virginia agriculture, sourcing corn and other grains from local farms when possible, creating spirits that genuinely taste of their place. Their approach combines traditional distilling methods with modern quality control, reflecting Chuck’s military background in process and procedure. The facility itself was built specifically for distilling rather than retrofitted, allowing them to design workflows and visitor experiences from scratch. They’re part of Virginia’s growing craft spirits movement, but maintain an independent, family-operated feel that larger operations often lose.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Founders While They Work

You’ll walk into a working distillery where the smell of fermenting grains and aging spirits fills the air. The Millers or their staff lead tours that focus on the actual production process, showing you the copper stills, fermentation tanks, and barrel storage areas. The tasting experience lets you sample their current lineup while learning about Virginia’s distilling history and the specific choices they make in production. The space feels industrial but welcoming, with the kind of authentic atmosphere you get when founders are still hands-on in daily operations. You’re likely to meet Chuck or Catherine during your visit, and they’re genuinely passionate about sharing their story and process.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Authentic Virginia Beach Craft Spirits

This is a solid choice for anyone interested in Virginia’s craft spirits scene or military veterans turned entrepreneurs. You’ll get an authentic look at small-batch distilling without the tourist polish of larger operations. The spirits are well-made and the story is compelling, especially if you appreciate the dedication it takes to build a distillery from scratch. Don’t expect elaborate facilities or fancy tasting rooms – this is about the spirits and the people making them. It’s particularly appealing to visitors who want to support veteran-owned businesses and taste spirits made with Virginia ingredients.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to confirm hours and availability, as this is still a small operation that occasionally adjusts schedules for production needs. The distillery is located on Virginia Beach Boulevard, which can be busy, but parking is available on-site. Ask Chuck about his transition from military service to distilling – it’s a fascinating story that adds context to everything you’ll taste. If you’re visiting other Virginia Beach attractions, this makes a good add-on activity, but allow enough time to properly appreciate the tour and tasting. They often have seasonal spirits or limited releases available, so ask what’s new or special during your visit.
