ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Virginia's First Legal Distillery Since Prohibition

Catoctin Creek Distilling Company sits on West Main Street in Purcellville, Virginia, making it the first legal distillery in Loudoun County since Prohibition. Founded in 2009 by Scott and Becky Harris, the operation started when Scott, a software engineer, and Becky, a chemical engineer, decided to turn their shared passion for spirits into something real. They spent years navigating regulations and convincing local officials that a distillery could work in their historic downtown. The couple opened their doors in a restored building that used to house various Main Street businesses over the decades. They focus on rye whiskey and gin, taking an organic approach that sets them apart from most craft distilleries. Scott handles the distilling while Becky manages the business side, and they’ve built their reputation on doing things differently. The distillery operates with a 400-gallon copper pot still from Germany, and they’re serious about their organic certifications. You’ll find them making Roundstone Rye, various seasonal gins, and limited releases that showcase what happens when engineers apply precision to traditional distilling methods. The space feels like a working distillery first, tasting room second, which means you’re seeing the real operation when you visit.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Certified Organic Spirits From German Copper

Catoctin Creek was Virginia’s first legal distillery to open after Prohibition and remains one of the few certified organic distilleries in the country. Scott and Becky Harris use 100% organic ingredients, which means higher costs but cleaner flavors, and they’re certified by the USDA for both their processes and final products. Their flagship Roundstone Rye uses a mash bill that’s 100% rye grain instead of the typical 51% minimum, creating a spicier, more complex profile that’s won them recognition at international spirits competitions. The distillery also operates as a Virginia farm distillery, meaning they source ingredients locally when possible and focus on small-batch production that rarely exceeds a few hundred bottles per release.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Engineers Turned Distillers Teaching Their Craft

You’ll walk into a working distillery where the smell of fermenting grain and copper stills dominates the space. Scott or Becky often lead tours themselves, explaining their organic process and letting you taste directly from barrels when possible. The tasting room occupies the front of the building with large windows facing Main Street, and you can watch the distilling operation behind glass partitions. Tours cover their mashing, fermentation, and distillation process with detailed explanations of why they chose organic methods and how their German copper still differs from column stills. The atmosphere feels more like visiting a craft brewery than a large-scale distillery, with industrial equipment mixed with handwritten batch notes and a casual, educational approach.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Rye Whiskey Worth The Drive to Virginia

This works best for spirits enthusiasts who want to understand the technical side of distilling and appreciate the organic approach. You’re getting access to the actual founders who can explain every decision they’ve made, from grain sourcing to barrel selection. The rye whiskey is legitimately excellent and you won’t find it widely distributed, so tasting here gives you something most people haven’t tried. It’s not the place for large groups looking for entertainment or people who prefer sweeter bourbons, since rye whiskey has more spice and complexity. The setting is intimate and educational rather than flashy, which means you’ll learn more about distilling in an hour here than at most larger operations.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website for current hours since they sometimes close for production or private events. Parking can be tight on Main Street, but there’s usually space within a block or two of the distillery. Ask about their barrel aging program if you’re interested in purchasing a whole barrel, and definitely try the Roundstone Rye alongside their seasonal gin to understand their range. The best time to visit is when Scott or Becky are personally running the tasting room, which happens more often than you’d expect at most distilleries. They’re genuinely passionate about explaining their organic process, so don’t hesitate to ask technical questions about their methods.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Catoctin Creek Distilling Company — Visitor FAQ

What makes Catoctin Creek different from other craft distilleries?
They’re one of the few USDA-certified organic distilleries in the country, using 100% organic ingredients and traditional copper pot distillation. Their Roundstone Rye uses 100% rye grain instead of the typical 51% minimum, creating a more complex, spicier whiskey profile.
Do Scott and Becky Harris still run tours personally?
Yes, the founders often lead tours and tastings themselves, especially on weekends. They’re both engineers who love explaining the technical details of their organic distilling process and can answer detailed questions about their methods.
Is their rye whiskey available in stores or only at the distillery?
Roundstone Rye has limited distribution in Virginia and a few other states, but their barrel-proof and limited releases are typically only available at the distillery. Visiting gives you access to spirits you can’t find elsewhere.
