ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Bourbon History Brought Back to Life

Castle & Key Distillery sits on the restored grounds of the historic Old Taylor Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, a site that dates back to 1887. Founded by Wes Murry and Will Arvin in 2014, this ambitious project brought one of Kentucky’s most architecturally significant distillery properties back to life after sitting dormant for decades. Murry, a former brand manager at Brown-Forman, and Arvin, who worked in finance, spent years convincing investors and the community that they could resurrect this forgotten piece of bourbon history. The property features the stunning castle-like limestone buildings that give the distillery its name, including the iconic sunken gardens that were once part of Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr.’s grand vision. They produce bourbon, rye whiskey, gin, and vodka using both traditional methods and modern innovation. Master Distiller Brett Connors, who previously worked at Heaven Hill, leads production in the restored facilities that now house modern equipment within the historic stone walls. The first bourbon was released in 2020 after six years of aging, marking the official return of whiskey production to this legendary site. You’ll find yourself walking through what feels like bourbon royalty’s former estate, complete with terraced gardens and limestone architecture that transports you back to the Gilded Age of American whiskey.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Gin from Their Own Sunken Gardens

Castle & Key is literally built on bourbon history—this is the restored Old Taylor Distillery where Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. created some of America’s most legendary whiskeys in the late 1800s. The limestone castle architecture is unlike anything else in Kentucky’s bourbon trail, featuring sunken gardens, stone towers, and terraced landscapes that were designed to impress visiting dignitaries over a century ago. What sets them apart today is their dual focus on aged whiskey and white spirits, producing both bourbon and a highly regarded gin called Restoration Gin that uses botanicals grown in their own gardens. The scale here is impressive too—they’ve invested over $50 million in restoration and modern equipment, making this one of the most ambitious distillery revival projects in Kentucky history. They’re also one of the few distilleries that bottles everything on-site and grows some of their own botanicals, creating a true seed-to-bottle operation in certain products.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Medieval Castle Meets Modern Bourbon Making

You’ll start your visit walking through the restored sunken gardens before entering the castle-like limestone buildings that house the production facilities. Tours take you through the mash house, fermentation rooms, and barrel warehouses while guides explain both the historic significance of the site and the modern bourbon-making process. The highlight is seeing the massive copper pot stills used for gin production alongside the column stills for whiskey, showing the versatility of their operation. The tasting room occupies part of the restored castle structure, where you can sample their current releases including Restoration Gin, vodka, and their recently released bourbon and rye. The stone architecture creates an almost medieval atmosphere that’s completely different from typical Kentucky distillery experiences. Tours run about 90 minutes and include tastings of their full product lineup.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Historic Architecture Plus Award-Winning Spirits

If you’re into bourbon history and architecture, Castle & Key is absolutely worth the trip. The restored buildings and grounds are genuinely stunning, and the story of bringing this dormant site back to life is compelling. You’ll get to taste some legitimately good spirits, particularly their gin which has won several awards and shows their distilling chops beyond just whiskey. The bourbon is still relatively young since they only started production in 2016, so if you’re looking for aged, complex whiskeys, temper your expectations. This appeals most to people who appreciate the craftsmanship of restoration and want to be part of a historic comeback story. Casual visitors will enjoy the beautiful setting and solid spirits, while serious bourbon enthusiasts will appreciate witnessing this legendary site’s rebirth.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Book tours online well in advance, especially for weekend visits, as they often sell out during peak bourbon tourism seasons. The property is about 15 minutes from downtown Frankfort on McCracken Pike, and GPS will get you there easily with plenty of free parking available. Plan to spend at least two hours if you want to fully appreciate both the tour and the grounds—bring a camera because the architecture and gardens are genuinely photogenic. Ask your tour guide about the restoration process and the challenges of bringing 130-year-old buildings back to production standards. If you’re a gin drinker, definitely try the Restoration Gin which uses botanicals from their own gardens. The gift shop has good bottle selection, but their bourbon releases can sell out quickly due to limited production. Don’t rush through the sunken gardens after your tour—they’re beautifully maintained and offer great views of the castle structure.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Castle & Key Distillery — Visitor FAQ

What’s the history behind the castle-like buildings?
The limestone buildings date back to 1887 when Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr. built the Old Taylor Distillery on this site. Taylor designed the facility with castle-like architecture and sunken gardens to create one of the most impressive distillery properties in Kentucky. The buildings sat dormant for decades before Castle & Key restored them starting in 2014.
How old is Castle & Key’s bourbon?
Their bourbon is currently released as a 4-year-old expression since they started distilling in 2016. As the distillery continues aging barrels, they’ll eventually release older expressions, but right now everything is relatively young compared to established Kentucky bourbon brands.
Do I need reservations for tours?
Yes, reservations are required for all tours and should be made online through their website. Tours frequently sell out, especially on weekends during peak bourbon tourism seasons, so booking well in advance is recommended.
What makes their gin special?
Restoration Gin uses botanicals that are actually grown in their restored sunken gardens on the property, creating a true farm-to-bottle gin. This garden-to-glass approach gives it a unique floral character that’s won several awards and sets it apart from typical commercial gins.
