ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Historic Jail Building That Makes Bourbon Now

Boone County Jail Distillery sits in downtown Lebanon, Indiana, housed in what was once the actual Boone County Jail building from the 1800s. Founded by Bob Rhoads and his team, this craft distillery opened its doors in 2018, transforming the historic limestone jail into a unique spirits production facility and tasting room. The building’s thick stone walls and original architecture create an atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else – complete with restored jail cells that now serve as private tasting areas. They produce bourbon, moonshine, and flavored spirits, all crafted on-site using traditional methods combined with modern equipment. The distillery operates out of the ground floor where the old jail’s common areas once stood, while the upper level houses their production facilities. Rhoads, who has a background in construction and development, saw the potential in the abandoned jail building and spent years converting it into a fully functional distillery. The transformation required extensive renovation to meet modern safety codes while preserving the building’s historic character, including the original jail cells with their heavy metal doors and stone walls. What started as a passion project has grown into a legitimate craft distillery that draws visitors curious about both the spirits and the building’s fascinating past. The team focuses on small-batch production, with their copper still capable of producing around 50 gallons per batch, allowing them to maintain quality control and experiment with different recipes and aging processes.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Sip Spirits Inside Original Jail Cells

The building itself sets this distillery apart from anything else you’ll visit – drinking bourbon in an actual 19th-century jail cell isn’t an experience you can replicate elsewhere. The limestone walls are several feet thick, providing natural temperature control that benefits both the aging process and the visitor experience. Each of the restored jail cells serves as a private tasting room, complete with the original heavy metal doors and stone construction, creating an intimate and historically immersive drinking experience. The distillery has preserved much of the jail’s original architecture, including the cell block layout and some of the iron fixtures, while converting the space into a fully functional production facility.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Tourist Trap Here Just History and Bourbon

You’ll walk into a building that immediately transports you back in time, with thick limestone walls and the unmistakable feel of the old county jail. The tasting experience takes place in converted jail cells, where you can sit behind the original metal bars while sampling their bourbon and moonshine selections. Tours include both the production area and the historic spaces, with guides explaining both the distilling process and the building’s colorful history as the county lockup. The atmosphere is intimate and quirky – there’s something surreal about sipping craft bourbon where prisoners once served their time. The staff embraces the theme without going overboard, letting the building’s natural character speak for itself.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth It For The Story Alone

If you’re drawn to unique experiences over polished tourist attractions, this place delivers something genuinely different. History buffs and bourbon lovers will find plenty to appreciate, and the novelty of drinking in jail cells makes it memorable even for casual visitors. The spirits are solid craft products, though the real draw is the combination of decent bourbon and an absolutely unique setting. It’s not the largest operation or the most sophisticated tasting room, but you won’t find this experience anywhere else. Perfect for groups looking for something offbeat or anyone who wants their distillery visits to come with a good story.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media for current hours and availability, as they sometimes host private events that can affect regular visiting hours. The building can get chilly due to those thick stone walls, so bring a light jacket even in warmer weather. Ask about the building’s history during your visit – the staff has researched the old jail records and can share stories about some of the more colorful former ‘residents.’ Parking is available on the street in downtown Lebanon, and the location is easy to find on North Meridian Street. If you’re driving from Indianapolis, it’s about a 45-minute trip northwest, making it a reasonable day trip destination.
