Bogue Sound Distillery sits on Bogue Commercial Drive in the small coastal town of Bogue, North Carolina, part of the Crystal Coast region. Founded by husband-and-wife team Mark and Kim Hewitt, this craft distillery opened in 2016 after the couple left their corporate careers to pursue their passion for creating premium spirits. The distillery operates out of a 3,000-square-foot facility that houses their custom-built copper still and barrel aging room, focusing on small-batch bourbon, rum, and moonshine production.
The Hewitts’ journey into distilling began during a vacation to Kentucky’s bourbon country, where they became fascinated with the craft and science behind spirit production. Mark, a former engineer, spent two years researching and planning before they made the leap. They worked closely with local officials to become one of the first legal distilleries in Carteret County, navigating complex regulations to bring craft spirits to the Crystal Coast. Kim handles the business operations while Mark focuses on production, using traditional methods combined with his engineering precision.
Visitors to Bogue Sound get an intimate look at small-batch distilling in action. The operation produces around 200 cases per month, with everything from mashing to bottling happening on-site. The tasting room maintains a relaxed, coastal vibe that reflects the local culture, and the Hewitts often personally conduct tours and tastings. You can watch the entire process from grain to glass, and the couple’s enthusiasm for their craft comes through in every interaction.
