ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Industrial Complex Craft That Actually Works

Bellemara Distillery sits in an industrial complex on Clerico Lane in Hillsborough Township, about 45 minutes southwest of New York City. Founded by husband-and-wife team Mike and Maria Posteraro, this New Jersey craft operation opened in 2019 after years of planning and navigating state regulations. Mike brings a background in brewing and distilling technology, while Maria handles the business side—they’re both hands-on in daily operations. The 3,000-square-foot facility houses a custom copper still system and produces bourbon, rye whiskey, vodka, and gin in small batches. The Posteraros started this venture after Mike’s fascination with distilling grew from homebrewing hobby to serious pursuit. They spent three years working through New Jersey’s complex distillery licensing process and finding the right location that could handle production while welcoming visitors. Their approach focuses on traditional techniques with modern equipment—they source grains from regional farms when possible and age their whiskeys in new American oak barrels stored on-site. Mike handles the production side while Maria manages tastings and the retail operation. Visitors get a genuine behind-the-scenes look at small-batch distilling without the polish of larger operations. The space feels like what it is—a working distillery where you might catch Mike checking fermentation tanks or Maria preparing for the next tasting group. They offer guided tours that explain their grain-to-glass process, and tastings happen at a simple bar setup where you can try their current lineup. It’s intimate and educational rather than flashy, giving you direct access to the people actually making the spirits.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Real Founders Leading Every Single Tour

Bellemara operates as one of New Jersey’s newer farm-to-glass distilleries, sourcing grains from Mid-Atlantic farms when possible and handling every step of production in-house. The Posteraros designed their facility around flexibility—their copper still system lets them switch between producing whiskey, vodka, and gin without major changeovers. What sets them apart is the direct founder involvement you get during visits. Mike often leads tours himself, explaining technical details about mash bills and distillation cuts that you’d never hear on scripted tours at larger operations. Their location in central New Jersey puts them within easy reach of both New York and Philadelphia metro areas, but they maintain a decidedly local focus.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Scripts Here Just Honest Answers

Tours happen in the actual production space where you’ll see their mash tuns, fermentation tanks, and copper stills up close. Mike or Maria typically guide groups through their process, from grain selection through distillation and aging—they’re not reading scripts, so questions about technical details get real answers. The tasting happens at their retail bar where you’ll sample their current whiskey, vodka, and gin lineup while they explain what makes each distinctive. The space smells like fermenting grain and oak, and you might hear equipment running if you visit during production days. It’s genuine and unpolished in the best way—you’re seeing how small-batch spirits actually get made.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Skip the Polish For the Real Thing

If you’re interested in the actual craft of distilling and want to meet the people behind the bottles, Bellemara delivers. It’s perfect for spirits enthusiasts who prefer technical discussions over marketing presentations, and anyone curious about New Jersey’s growing craft distillery scene. You won’t find elaborate visitor centers or restaurant service here—this is about the spirits and the process. The intimate scale means you get personal attention and can ask detailed questions about their methods. Skip it if you’re looking for a polished tourist experience or large group entertainment.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website before visiting since hours can vary around production schedules. The industrial location isn’t immediately obvious from the road—look for Building 5 in the complex and don’t expect fancy signage. Weekends tend to offer the best chance of catching both Mike and Maria on-site. Ask about their barrel aging process and grain sourcing if you want to get into the technical details they clearly enjoy discussing. Parking is available in the lot, but GPS might get confused by the industrial complex layout.
