ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Bardenay Restaurant & Distillery sits on Grove Street in downtown Boise, claiming the distinction of being Idaho’s first distillery since Prohibition ended. Kevin Settles founded the operation in 2000, bringing together his vision of a restaurant and distillery under one roof—a concept that was pretty revolutionary at the time. The guy had restaurant experience but jumped into distilling because he saw an opportunity to create something completely different in Idaho’s dining scene. The downtown location houses both the production facility and a full restaurant, making it part dining destination, part spirits producer. They distill vodka, gin, rum, and whiskey on-site, with the stills visible from the restaurant floor so you can watch the process while you eat. Settles and his team built this as more than just a distillery—it’s designed as an entertainment venue where the spirits production is part of the show. The restaurant serves Northwest cuisine paired with their house-made spirits, and they’ve been refining both the food and the distilling operation for over two decades. What started as an experiment in combining dining with distilling has become a template that other operations have followed, but Bardenay was doing it first in Idaho.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Being Idaho’s first legal distillery since Prohibition gives Bardenay genuine historical significance in the state’s spirits landscape. The restaurant-distillery combination was groundbreaking when Settles opened it in 2000, and the integration is real—you can literally watch the distillation process from your dinner table. Their location in downtown Boise puts them in the heart of the city’s entertainment district, making them as much a dining destination as a distillery visit. They’ve maintained both operations at a high level for over 20 years, which is harder than it sounds when you’re trying to excel at both food service and spirits production simultaneously.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

You’ll walk into a restaurant first, distillery second—the dining room dominates the space with the production equipment visible behind glass. The atmosphere feels more like an upscale casual restaurant than a traditional distillery, with servers who can talk about both the food menu and the spirits being made on-site. Tours are available and focus on their production process, but the real experience is dining while watching the stills work. The tasting flights let you sample their full range of spirits, from vodka through aged whiskey, and the bartenders know how to showcase each one properly. The noise level and crowd depend on whether you’re there for lunch, dinner, or weekend service—it’s a working restaurant with all that entails.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you want to see how restaurant and distillery operations can work together, this is the template. Food lovers will appreciate the Northwest cuisine and creative cocktail program using house spirits, while spirits enthusiasts can taste everything from clear spirits to aged whiskeys made on-site. Don’t expect a quiet, contemplative distillery experience—this is a busy restaurant where distilling happens to occur. The historical significance as Idaho’s first modern distillery adds context, but you’re really coming for the combination experience rather than groundbreaking spirits. It works well for groups who want both food and spirits education in one stop.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Make dinner reservations if you’re planning to eat—the restaurant side gets busy, especially on weekends. Ask your server about distillery tours when you arrive, as they can arrange them around the restaurant’s schedule. Try their cocktails made with house spirits rather than just doing a tasting flight if you want to see how they use their products. Parking can be challenging in downtown Boise, so plan extra time to find a spot or use ride service. The lunch crowd is generally lighter if you prefer a quieter experience to focus on the distillery aspect.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Bardenay Restaurant & Distillery | Boise — Visitor FAQ

Can I tour the distillery without eating at the restaurant?
Yes, you can arrange distillery tours and tastings without dining, though the operations are integrated so you’ll be walking through restaurant space. Tours work around meal service schedules, so timing matters.
What makes this different from other distillery visits?
You’re visiting a working restaurant where distilling happens, not a traditional distillery with tours. The experience combines dining, cocktails, and spirits education in one location, which was innovative when they started.
Do you have parking downtown?
Parking is typical downtown Boise street and lot parking, which can be challenging during busy periods. Plan extra time to find a spot or consider ride service, especially for dinner visits.
