ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Working Farm That Makes Whiskey Too

Balance Distilling Company sits on a 15-acre farm in Smiths Grove, Kentucky, about 30 minutes north of Bowling Green. Founded in 2017 by husband-and-wife team Chad and Shannon McKenzie, this craft distillery emerged from Chad’s background in engineering and Shannon’s business acumen, combined with a shared passion for creating authentic Kentucky spirits. The couple converted a former tobacco farm into their distilling operation, complete with a modern production facility and tasting room that maintains the rural charm of its agricultural roots. They focus on small-batch bourbon, rye whiskey, and seasonal spirits using traditional Kentucky methods with modern precision. The McKenzies built Balance around the philosophy that great whiskey requires patience, quality ingredients, and respect for the craft—values reflected in everything from their grain sourcing to their aging process. The distillery name reflects their approach to balancing traditional techniques with innovative ideas, family life with business demands, and respect for Kentucky’s whiskey heritage with their own creative vision. What started as weekend experiments in their garage has evolved into a legitimate craft distillery that’s gaining recognition among Kentucky bourbon enthusiasts. You’ll find them actively involved in every aspect of production, from mashing and distilling to greeting visitors in the tasting room, making this a genuinely personal experience rather than a corporate tour.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Engineering Meets Bourbon With Precision

Balance Distilling stands out for its farm-to-bottle approach, growing some of their own corn on the property and sourcing other grains from Kentucky farms within a 50-mile radius. The McKenzies installed a custom 500-gallon copper pot still system that allows them to control every aspect of the distillation process with engineering precision. Their aging warehouse utilizes the natural temperature fluctuations of Kentucky’s climate without climate control, believing that seasonal variations create better flavor development. Chad’s engineering background shows in their meticulous record-keeping and process control—they track every barrel individually and adjust techniques based on detailed data analysis. Unlike larger operations, they’re hands-on with every batch, often making real-time adjustments based on taste and aroma during distillation.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Makers Behind Every Bottle

You’ll typically be greeted by Chad or Shannon themselves, who personally conduct most tours and tastings in their intimate tasting room that overlooks the production floor. The tour walks you through their grain storage, milling, and fermentation areas before reaching the gleaming copper stills where you can observe active distillation when they’re running. The tasting room features a rustic bar made from reclaimed barn wood, and tastings include their current releases with detailed explanations of each spirit’s production story. The atmosphere feels like visiting friends who happen to make exceptional whiskey—casual, educational, and genuinely welcoming without any corporate polish.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Serious Whiskey Education Worth the Drive

This is perfect for serious whiskey enthusiasts who appreciate craft distilling and want to understand the process from passionate practitioners. You’re not getting a polished, scripted experience—you’re getting authentic insights from the people who actually make the whiskey. The intimate setting means you can ask detailed questions and get real answers about technique, challenges, and the craft distilling business. However, if you’re looking for a large-scale Kentucky bourbon palace experience with gift shops and restaurants, this isn’t it. The value here is in the personal connection, education, and tasting spirits that aren’t widely distributed.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their Facebook page before visiting, as they’re a small operation and hours can vary based on production schedules and personal commitments. The GPS coordinates work fine, but look for the Balance Distilling sign on Will Bohannon Road—it’s easy to miss if you’re not paying attention. Weekend visits often offer the best chance to catch both Chad and Shannon there together, and they’re more likely to be distilling on weekdays if you want to see the process in action. Ask about their barrel program if you’re interested in purchasing a private barrel, and don’t miss trying their rye whiskey if it’s available—it showcases their attention to detail particularly well.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Balance Distilling Company — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make an appointment to visit?

How long does a typical visit last?
Plan for about an hour to 90 minutes total, including the production tour and tasting. The McKenzies don’t rush visitors and enjoy answering questions about their process and Kentucky whiskey in general.
