ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

New Orleans Craft Spirits Back from the Dead

Atelier Vie sits in a converted warehouse on South Broad Street in New Orleans, founded in 2011 by Jedd Haas, a former lawyer who traded his legal career for craft distilling. The name means ‘workshop of life’ in French, and that philosophy runs through everything they do in this 3,000-square-foot facility. Haas started with a 500-gallon copper pot still and a vision to create distinctly New Orleans spirits that capture the city’s unique character. The distillery produces whiskey, rum, gin, and absinthe, with each spirit reflecting local ingredients and traditions. What began as a one-man operation has grown into one of Louisiana’s most respected craft distilleries, though it maintains that intimate workshop feel. The space combines industrial warehouse bones with Creole influences, featuring exposed brick walls and cypress wood accents that speak to the building’s history as part of the Irish Channel neighborhood. You’ll find Haas still deeply involved in daily operations, often leading tastings himself and sharing stories about New Orleans’ distilling heritage that dates back centuries before Prohibition wiped it out.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

First Legal Distillery Since Prohibition Ended

Atelier Vie stands as New Orleans’ first legal distillery since Prohibition ended, bringing back a tradition that once made the city a spirits powerhouse. Haas sources Louisiana sugarcane for his rums and uses techniques that honor both French Creole and American whiskey traditions. The distillery’s Euphrosine Gin #9 incorporates nine botanicals including Louisiana oranges and other regional ingredients, while their Toulouse Green absinthe follows traditional French methods using a vintage recipe. What really sets them apart is the commitment to local sourcing and historical accuracy – Haas spent years researching pre-Prohibition New Orleans distilling methods and adapted them for modern production. The small scale allows for constant experimentation, and you’ll often find limited releases that showcase seasonal Louisiana ingredients or historical spirits that disappeared decades ago.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Workshop Not Tourist Trap Real Distillers at Work

Tours are intimate affairs, usually led by Haas himself or another distiller who can explain the technical details while you watch the 500-gallon copper still in action. The space feels more like an artisan’s workshop than a polished visitor center, with bottles aging in barrels stacked along the walls and the sweet smell of fermenting molasses filling the air. Tastings include their full lineup, from the smooth Euphrosine Gin to their complex whiskey, and you’ll learn about each spirit’s connection to New Orleans history. The experience is conversational rather than scripted – expect to ask questions and get detailed answers about everything from mash bills to the neighborhood’s distilling past. The warehouse setting means it can get warm, but that adds to the authentic working distillery atmosphere.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth It for Spirits Geeks

If you’re interested in craft spirits and local history, absolutely. This isn’t a big production facility with flashy tours – it’s a working artisan distillery where you’ll learn about the actual craft of distilling from people who live it daily. Cocktail enthusiasts will appreciate the technical knowledge shared during tastings, while history buffs will love hearing about New Orleans’ forgotten distilling heritage. The intimate setting means you’re not just another tourist; you’re getting a behind-the-scenes look at how craft spirits are really made. However, if you’re expecting a polished corporate experience with a gift shop full of branded merchandise, this might not be your speed. The appeal here is authenticity and education over entertainment.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to schedule your visit – they don’t always have set tour times and prefer to give personalized attention rather than rush groups through. The warehouse location can be tricky to find, so use GPS and look for the Atelier Vie sign on the building. Parking is available on-site, which is a blessing in New Orleans. Ask Haas about the historical recipes he’s researched – he’s passionate about the subject and has fascinating stories about pre-Prohibition New Orleans distilling. If you’re a spirits geek, don’t hesitate to get technical with your questions; they appreciate visitors who are genuinely interested in the craft. Try their absinthe if you’ve never had real absinthe – it’s nothing like the artificial stuff you might have encountered elsewhere.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Atelier Vie, LLC — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make an appointment to visit?
Yes, Atelier Vie operates by appointment only. Call ahead to schedule your tour and tasting, as they prefer to give personalized attention rather than run scheduled group tours throughout the day.
What makes your spirits uniquely New Orleans?
We use Louisiana sugarcane for our rums, incorporate local botanicals like Louisiana oranges in our gin, and follow historical recipes that were used in New Orleans before Prohibition. Our absinthe, in particular, represents a spirit that was hugely popular in New Orleans but disappeared for decades.
Are you really the first distillery in New Orleans since Prohibition?
Yes, we’re the first legal distillery to operate in New Orleans since Prohibition ended the city’s once-thriving spirits industry. New Orleans was actually a major distilling center before 1919, and we’re working to revive that tradition using researched historical methods and recipes.
