ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

ASW Distillery at The Battery Atlanta sits in the heart of Atlanta’s premier mixed-use development, just steps from Truist Park where the Braves play. Founded by Charlie Thompson, Justin Manglitz, and Jim Chasteen in 2016, ASW originally launched in downtown Atlanta before expanding to this high-profile location in Cobb County. The sleek, modern distillery occupies over 4,000 square feet in The Battery, bringing craft spirits production to one of Atlanta’s busiest entertainment districts. They produce a full lineup including Fiddler bourbon, Hunker vodka, and Resurgens rye whiskey, all made on custom copper stills from Vendome Copper & Brass Works. The founding trio came together with complementary skills—Thompson brings finance background, Manglitz has marketing expertise, and Chasteen contributes operations knowledge. They named the distillery ASW for ‘American Spirit Whiskey’ and set out to create distinctly Southern spirits using local ingredients when possible. The move to The Battery in 2019 marked a major expansion, allowing them to scale production while creating an immersive visitor experience. Master distiller duties rotate among the founders, with each bringing their own perspective to recipe development and production techniques. The Battery location transforms the typical distillery visit into something closer to urban entertainment. You’re touring a working production facility surrounded by restaurants, shops, and the energy of game day crowds when the Braves are playing. The space balances industrial equipment with polished finishes, creating an atmosphere that feels both authentic and accessible. Their proximity to major league baseball means weekend visits often coincide with pre-game crowds, adding an unexpected layer to the spirits experience.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Few distilleries can claim a location inside a major sports and entertainment complex, but ASW’s Battery location puts them at the center of Atlanta’s newest cultural hub. The distillery operates year-round production in full view of visitors, using custom-designed stills that were specifically configured for their urban setting. Their Fiddler bourbon uses a high-rye mash bill that sets it apart from traditional wheated Southern bourbons, while their Resurgens rye pays homage to Atlanta’s phoenix-like rise from Civil War ashes. The founders’ decision to name products after Atlanta and Georgia history creates a sense of place that goes beyond typical craft distillery marketing.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

You’ll walk through active production areas where the founders or their team explain each step of the distilling process, from mashing to bottling. The tours feel intimate despite the urban setting, with guides who genuinely know the equipment and can answer technical questions about their processes. Tastings happen at a dedicated bar area where you can sample their core lineup plus limited releases, often with one of the founders present to share stories about recipe development. The space smells like grain and oak, but the polished concrete floors and modern lighting keep things feeling contemporary rather than rustic.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you’re already planning to visit The Battery for dinner or a game, ASW makes an excellent addition to your evening. The distillery appeals most to bourbon enthusiasts who appreciate technical details about production and locals who want to support Atlanta-made spirits. Don’t expect the pastoral charm of rural distilleries—this is urban craft distilling with all the energy that comes with that setting. The tours provide genuine insight into small-scale production, and the founders’ passion for their products comes through clearly when they’re present.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Book tours online in advance, especially during baseball season when The Battery gets packed with Braves fans. Parking can be challenging during games, so consider ride-sharing or using MARTA if you’re coming from downtown Atlanta. The best time to visit is weekday afternoons when production is typically running and crowds are lighter. Ask specifically about their barrel aging program and the differences between their high-rye bourbon and traditional Southern recipes. If you’re planning dinner at The Battery afterward, the staff can recommend restaurants that feature ASW spirits in their cocktail programs.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ASW Distillery at The Battery Atlanta, home of Fiddler Bourbon, Hunker Vodka & more — Visitor FAQ

Can I visit ASW even if there’s a Braves game happening?
Yes, but expect much larger crowds and limited parking during game days. The distillery stays open during games, but tours may be more crowded and parking becomes expensive. Consider arriving early or using alternative transportation.
What makes ASW’s bourbon different from other Southern distilleries?
Their Fiddler bourbon uses a high-rye mash bill instead of the wheated recipes common in the South, creating spicier flavor notes. This gives it more in common with Kentucky high-rye bourbons than traditional Georgia whiskeys.
Do the founders still work at the distillery daily?
Yes, Charlie Thompson, Justin Manglitz, and Jim Chasteen remain actively involved in daily operations and often lead tours personally. They rotate distilling duties and are frequently on-site, especially during weekend visits.
