ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

ASW Distillery sits in Atlanta’s Armour industrial district, founded in 2016 by Justin Manglitz, Jim Chasteen, and Charlie Thompson. The trio converted a 6,000-square-foot warehouse into Georgia’s first whiskey distillery since Prohibition, installing custom copper stills and creating a production facility that cranks out bourbon, rye, gin, and rum. Manglitz, a former McKinsey consultant, teamed up with Chasteen’s business acumen and Thompson’s engineering background to tackle Atlanta’s complex distilling regulations and bring craft spirits back to the city. The operation centers around their 500-gallon copper pot still and 26-foot rectifying column, producing everything from their flagship Fiddler bourbon to Duality double malt whiskey. Master distiller Justin Manglitz draws from both Scottish and American whiskey traditions, aging spirits in new American oak and finishing some expressions in wine barrels. The team’s commitment to local sourcing shows in their use of Georgia-grown corn and their partnerships with Atlanta-area businesses for everything from barrel aging to cocktail ingredients. Visitors walk through an active production facility where you can see grain milling, fermentation tanks bubbling away, and barrels aging in climate-controlled warehouses. The tasting room occupies the front of the building with industrial-chic vibes—exposed brick, steel beams, and windows looking into the distillery floor. You’re not just sampling spirits here; you’re watching them get made, often with distillers happy to explain their process while pulling samples straight from barrels.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

ASW broke Atlanta’s 80-year dry spell on whiskey production, becoming the first distillery to operate in the city since Prohibition ended. Their approach blends American bourbon traditions with Scottish whisky techniques—they’re one of the few American distilleries doing true double malt whiskey, using both malted and unmalted barley in their mash bills. The location itself tells a story: they’re in the same industrial corridor where Coca-Cola got its start, and their warehouse sits among automotive shops and light manufacturing, giving it an authentic working-class Atlanta feel rather than the pastoral farm settings of most distilleries.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Tours run about 45 minutes and take you through the entire production process, from grain delivery to bottling. You’ll smell the sweet mash cooking in their fermenters, hear the steady drip from the copper stills, and get to stick your nose into barrels aging in their rickhouse. The guides are usually distillers or production staff who can answer technical questions about cut points and barrel char levels. Tastings happen at a long bar overlooking the production floor, and you’ll try four to five spirits including their Fiddler bourbon, Duality double malt, and seasonal releases. The space feels like a working distillery first and tourist attraction second—you might have to pause the tour when they’re moving barrels or cleaning equipment.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you’re into craft spirits and want to see actual production happening, ASW delivers. It’s perfect for whiskey geeks who appreciate technical details and want to taste spirits you can’t find outside Georgia. The urban industrial setting appeals to folks who prefer city distilleries over rural operations, and the variety of spirits means even gin or rum drinkers won’t get bored. However, if you’re looking for scenic views or polished tourist experiences, this isn’t that kind of place. It’s a working distillery that happens to give tours, not a destination designed primarily for visitors.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Book tours online since they only run a few times per week and fill up quickly, especially on weekends. The distillery is tucked into an industrial area that GPS sometimes struggles with—look for the ASW sign on the building rather than relying entirely on street numbers. Tours work best during production hours when you can see equipment running and smell active fermentation. Ask specifically about barrel samples during your visit; they often have experimental batches aging that aren’t available for purchase yet. Park in their small lot or on Armour Drive, but avoid blocking any loading docks since this is an active industrial area.
