Altered State Distillery sits in a converted warehouse at 1535 W 8th St in Erie, Pennsylvania, where founders Mike Stock and Jim Wertz launched their craft spirits operation in 2016. Stock, a former engineer, and Wertz, who worked in politics and media, decided to channel their passion for quality spirits into Erie’s growing craft beverage scene. The 3,000-square-foot facility houses their copper still and production space, where they focus on bourbon, rye whiskey, and gin using locally sourced grains when possible.
The journey to opening wasn’t quick—Stock and Wertz spent over two years navigating regulations, perfecting recipes, and converting their industrial space into a working distillery. They brought in equipment that allows them to control every aspect of production, from mashing to bottling. The philosophy centers on small-batch production with attention to detail rather than rushing products to market. Stock handles much of the technical distilling work while Wertz manages the business side and community connections.
Visitors find a no-frills operation where you can see the entire process and talk directly with the people making the spirits. The tasting room occupies part of the production space, giving tours an authentic behind-the-scenes feel. They’re not trying to be the fanciest operation in town, but they’re serious about making good whiskey and gin while building relationships with customers who appreciate craft spirits made locally.
