ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Blue Ridge Bourbon From Local Grain

5 Mile Mountain Distillery sits along Floyd Highway in the heart of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, where founders Chip and Shannon Diehl turned their love for craft spirits into reality in 2014. The couple launched their operation in Floyd County after Chip’s background in engineering met Shannon’s passion for hospitality, creating a distillery that focuses on small-batch bourbon, rye, and moonshine production. Their 2,000-square-foot facility houses a custom copper still system where they control every step of production from grain to bottle. The distillery draws its name from the five-mile stretch of mountain road leading to Floyd, emphasizing their connection to the local landscape and community. They’ve built their reputation on using traditional distilling methods while embracing modern quality control, producing spirits that reflect both Virginia’s distilling heritage and contemporary craft standards. The Diehls didn’t jump into distilling overnight—they spent years researching techniques, visiting other distilleries, and perfecting their recipes before opening their doors to the public. What started as weekend hobby experimentation evolved into a full-scale operation that now serves visitors from across Virginia and beyond, offering tastings and tours that showcase their hands-on approach to craft distilling.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Mountain Climate Aging Changes Everything

You’re visiting one of Floyd County’s first legal distilleries since Prohibition, making 5 Mile Mountain part of Virginia’s craft distilling renaissance in the Blue Ridge region. The Diehls source their corn from local Virginia farms when possible and use mountain spring water in their mash, connecting their spirits directly to the surrounding landscape. Their production runs stay genuinely small—we’re talking batches measured in dozens of bottles rather than hundreds—which means you’re tasting spirits that got individual attention throughout the process. The elevation and mountain climate create natural temperature fluctuations that affect aging, giving their aged spirits characteristics you won’t find in climate-controlled warehouse operations.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Like Visiting Friends Who Make Great Whiskey

You’ll taste spirits directly from the source in their rustic tasting room, where exposed beams and mountain views create an authentic Appalachian atmosphere. Chip or Shannon often handle tastings personally, walking you through their production process and explaining how mountain conditions affect flavor development. The space feels more like visiting friends who happen to make excellent whiskey than a formal distillery tour. You can see their copper still system and fermentation tanks from the tasting area, making the connection between production and what’s in your glass immediate and obvious. The intimate setting means you’re likely to end up in conversations about distilling techniques, local history, or Virginia’s growing craft spirits scene.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Small Batches Worth The Mountain Drive

This is perfect for bourbon enthusiasts who appreciate small-batch authenticity over polished corporate experiences. You’ll get genuine insights into craft distilling from people who handle every aspect of production themselves, not scripted tour guides. The mountain setting adds appeal for anyone exploring Floyd’s arts and music scene—you can easily combine a distillery visit with local galleries or the famous Floyd Country Store. Don’t expect elaborate facilities or extensive food offerings, but you will get quality spirits and genuine conversation about the craft. If you’re looking for Instagram-worthy spaces or large group entertainment, you might find better options elsewhere.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead before making the drive since hours can vary seasonally and they occasionally close for production work. The Floyd Highway location is straightforward to find, but GPS sometimes struggles with mountain roads, so have the actual address ready. Ask about their barrel aging process and how Virginia’s climate affects their spirits—the Diehls know their stuff and enjoy sharing technical details with interested visitors. Try their moonshine alongside their aged spirits to taste how the same base recipe develops differently over time. Weekend visits tend to be busier, especially during Floyd’s festival seasons, so weekday afternoons often provide more relaxed conversation time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

5 Mile Mountain Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do you need reservations for tastings?
Reservations aren’t required for regular tastings, but calling ahead is recommended since hours can vary seasonally. They occasionally close for production work or private events, so a quick call saves disappointment.
What’s the difference between your bourbon and moonshine?
The moonshine is their base spirit straight from the still—unaged and clear, showing pure distillation character. Their bourbon uses the same recipe but gets aged in charred oak barrels, which adds color, vanilla, and caramel flavors while mellowing the alcohol heat.
How does mountain distilling affect the spirits?
The elevation and temperature swings in Virginia’s mountains create natural aging conditions that differ from controlled warehouse environments. Seasonal temperature changes cause more expansion and contraction in barrels, potentially accelerating flavor extraction from the wood.
