A creamy, spiced rye whiskey cocktail that turns pumpkin into pure elegance

If fall had a signature nightcap, this would be it. The Pumpkin Flip is a silky, spiced cocktail that bridges the gap between after-dinner dessert and fireside pour, the kind of drink that makes you slow down and appreciate the season.

Flips are old-school cocktails, dating back to the 1600s, traditionally made with a spirit, a touch of sweetness, and a whole egg for that rich, velvety texture. Don’t let the egg scare you, it’s what gives the drink its luxurious body and smooth, custard-like mouthfeel.

For this version, we’re using Rittenhouse Rye, a bold, 100-proof whiskey that cuts beautifully through the creaminess and sweetness of pumpkin and spice. The rye’s peppery backbone keeps the drink from tipping into dessert territory, letting the pumpkin shine without becoming cloying.

The Pumpkin Flip Recipe

Ingredients (per cocktail):

The Pumpkin Flip
A fall favorite cocktail – The Pumpkin Flip

  • 2 oz Rittenhouse Rye Whiskey
  • 1 oz pumpkin purée (unsweetened)
  • ¾ oz maple syrup or demerara syrup
  • ½ oz heavy cream
  • 1 whole egg
  • ¼ tsp pumpkin pie spice (or mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove)
  • Freshly grated nutmeg (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Add all ingredients to a shaker without ice and dry shake for 10–15 seconds to emulsify the egg.
  2. Add ice and shake again until well-chilled.
  3. Strain into a chilled coupe glass.
  4. Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg.

Tasting Notes:

The first sip is pure autumn, creamy pumpkin, warm spice, and rye whiskey’s peppery edge all dancing together. It’s decadent but balanced, like liquid pumpkin pie with a grown-up twist.

Pro Tip:

If you want to impress, dust the top with nutmeg in a leaf-shaped stencil or torch a bit of cinnamon for aroma right before serving.
